Two invitations from NDHU Millet Farm and FATS

Dear All

Two invitations from NDHU Millet Farm and FATS (Food and Tourism Studies). We really hope you can join us.

(1) 5/24 (Friday) from 8am-3pm we host a series of indigenous cultural activities at millet farm and you are invited to join us. There is a lunch with pork, veggies, sweet potatoes, corns and millet rice provided. And of course, lots of singing and dancing! My tribal family and friends from Taitung make a huge effort to join us too. They will put on their beautiful dresses with their cultural pride to celebrate the Shooting Ear Festival with us. Don't miss the chance to meet them and know more about Taiwanese indigenous people and their hunting culture and ecological knowledge.

(2) 5/28 (Tuesday) the shared meal is on scheduled again. This week we will be more 'exotic' as our student from Malaysia will be our weekly chef. Yes, lots of spices are expected. It's hot, but I tell you it's so delicious! (We had a 'trial' meal last week at my place! Boy! That was awesome! ) As usual, we will have some fresh salad from our own garden and the campus farmer's market as well. Hot & fresh! What are you waiting for!

Both events are at Millet Farm (next to the parking lot of Indigenous College). The little green tin roof hut is our eating venue. 5/24 festival starts at 8am. 5/27 is at lunch time. The common kitchen is open at 10am on Tuesday and you are always welcome to come earlier and give us a hand to prepare for the meal together. Eating is fun, but able to cook and chat is a real treat for me in our busy academic lives. This will be our 5th open shared meal since the FATS common kitchen has been built by students and working holiday-makers in March.

2013東華小米園 小米除草工作坊

春， 來了。3/23東華小米園的小米除草工作坊上場囉。3/23也是「良食公社」第一次開伙。主食：太魯閣族的香蕉糯米飯。無毒香蕉是在地的蕉農陳大哥捐贈，我們跟太魯閣媽媽學做香香美味的糯米飯。由女兒雅竹(我們族文小大一)，帶領「觀光文化研究」師生3/22下午四點起，一起動手做。對族群飲食有興趣的朋友，歡迎一起來學習，為3/23 除草祭暖身備餐。更歡迎3/23前來東華小米園和我們一起彎腰除草，為小米祈福，和大地共舞。

FATS makapahay 工作假期 活動照片~

Makapahay是阿美語美好事物的統稱，在這4天3夜我們扭轉食物、觀光假期的認知，也許在水泥混和過程中，已經分不清烙動後的汗水，還是用熱情所灌溢的自來水，但這絕對是我們的動手動腳勞動趴，因為有你還有我們，使旅人、小米力和志工度過有意義的假期，當我們一起在土地上經營友善環境時，也就是實踐土地正義的開始。

FATS Makapahay 工作假期圓滿成功！

各位親愛的朋友大家好：FATS Makapahay工作假期在南華初英山社區協會木工達人邱琳福（阿公也是東華小米集力所第一位榮譽博士）三代、志工旅人、東華族文「觀光文化研究」修課同學、小米力和單車騎士2/28-3/3四天三夜，共勞共作的協力合作下，已完成我們擴建東華小米集力所外觀木工建築。

FATS「水果誠食」運動 ~芭蕉篇~

社會參與，有各種形式。

三月起東華原民院、族文系和FATS團隊
邀請大家用「吃芭蕉」來實踐社會參與。

蘋果芭蕉是在地志學蕉農陳威伸先生所種植生產。
我們鼓勵大家支持食物哩程低的在地無毒水果，
吃在地，也讓自己吃得更健康。

原民院二樓族文系辦外的信箱區是芭蕉誠食據點，
請自行取走所需香蕉，再依上面標示的價格，
將香蕉金，投入「誠食水果錢筒」。
我們不找零，謝謝您的支持與交關。

扣除芭蕉成本，本運動所有營收，將全數做為FATS和東華小米園公益活動的基金。

「加家久築屋公成」落成了！小米集力所Millet Pub (Public House)

連結社區、部落、學校，三位一體的夥伴關係，
創造老年、中年、青年，跨世代的協力合作，
建構族群、社會與多元文化的校園學習空間，它是愛、勇氣和夢想的集體文化實踐。

兩周的工作天（詳見小米總監的工班日記），我們蓋了「公寮」，做好了吃飯的石板桌。
也升起了爐火，點燃小米集力所家的溫度。
和一起「百手成家」諸位相信夢想家的希望。

有家了，我們還需要煮飯烤肉煮茶做菜的空間，讓小米園的農藝祭儀文化，藉著食物的展演，更具有深刻的意涵和土地正義實踐的力道。

FATS團隊和東華小米力結合「觀光文化研究」課程，共同籌劃「FATS makapahay 工作假期」。2/28，四天三夜連假，我們和南華社區阿公要一起來蓋桶窯泥灶，野炊廚房！

我們將開放校外20名熱血人士參加，來東華和我們一起「動手動腳勞動趴」。
用雙手、雙腳、身體、汗水和歡樂，成為小米集力所親愛的家人，體驗小米力的熱情。

浸身東華自然環境的地景，瞭解族群文化的內涵，和FATS推動責任旅行的意義。
起灶外，我們也和「單車合做社」的夥伴，一同實踐DIY的修復精神。

不能來的，也請大家用力放送。

Dear Friends,

Wishing you and your beloved a wonderful year of the Snake.

I have been doing several interesting projects which including farming and building in 2012 and organizing a responsible working holiday now. We have been doing the millet farm project over the past year and have had our first millet harvest in the Fall. The millet public house was just completed in early January in 2013.

I am on holiday now, but am trying to get the next project going. On 2/28 to 3/3, combining students of the course of Cultural Studies of Tourism and 20 off-campus volunteers, FATS Makapahay (in Amis tribal language this means the most beautiful and powerful), we will stage a holiday to promote the concept of being a 'good' tourist, including organizing a responsible tour for students and holiday makers. We aim to build an ‘open kitchen’ for traditional indigenous foodway practices and to learn and implement indigenous ecological knowledge. We will learn about indigenous cultures through working together with the community Masters and tribal elders who have years of expertise in local construction.

I also work with students and the FATS team to build an edible garden at NDHU. We hope to start from the campus and continue to spread the idea to communities. We believe ' If you eat then you're in.' I also want to invite you to become an honorary member of FATS Center (Food and Tourism Studies). Let me know if you are interested to join us. I am really enjoying my 'rooted' fieldwork on campus which has been inspired by masters’ wisdom and my own embodied experiences. It's not easy to deal with some of the paper work and rules, but I am glad and so proud of our students who have broken some of these rules. Our university is very supportive too. It's a great learning experience for me and now it's time to turn these experiences into words.
